Construction works on the 50-megawatt solar power plant being constructed at Galgu in the Yendi Municipality of the Northern Region, is expected to be completed by November this year.

The construction of the $59 million project, being spearheaded by the Bui Power Authority, began in September 2023, and it would ensure energy security and reliability in the country.

The project that involved the construction of a powerhouse, workers’ accommodation, a five-kilometre access road and other auxiliary works, is currently about 75 per cent complete.

Dr Samuel Kofi Dzamesi, Chief Executive Officer of Bui Power Authority, who led a delegation to inspect progress of work on the project at Galgu, said it formed part of government’s commitment to transform the country’s energy sector.

The delegation included Members of Parliament, officials from the Ministry of Energy, Ghana Grid Company Limited and traditional authorities.

Dr Dzamesi said the First Sky Group was the financier and contractor of the project under an engineering, procurement, construction, and financing agreement.

He said: “After completion, we will generate power, sell it, and pay the First Sky Group for eight years.”

“The 140 acres of land provided by the Overlord of Dagbon is sufficient for 100 megawatts. We hope to enter another agreement with the contractor for an additional 50 megawatts after completing this phase,” he added.

Mr Eric Seddy Kutortse, Executive Chairman of First Sky Group, commended the Bui Power Authority for bringing the project to life and the opportunity given to his company to contribute to the nation’s future and lead the charge for sustainable development.

He gave the assurance that the project would be ready for inauguration by November, this year, if everything went according to plan.

Mr Emmanuel Adumua-Bossmam, a Deputy Chief of Staff at the Office of the President, said the project was a catalyst for development and would help in creating jobs.

Mr Owuraku Aidoo, Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Energy, said the project demonstrated Bui Power Authority’s commitment to supporting the country’s renewable energy sector.

Alhaji Salifu Saeed, Board Member, Bui Power Authority, said the project was evidence of the peace in the Dagbon Traditional Area and called on the people to sustain the peace in the area.

Naa Dr Jacob Mahama, Chief of Zangbalun, who spoke on behalf of Ya-Na Abukari (II), Overlord of Dagbon, lauded the project and said “Solar energy will enable our communities to thrive, foster economic growth and development. So, we are all prepared to give our best in ways that will promote the completion of the project on schedule.”
