Parliament approves GHS 5.3 billion for Roads Ministry 

Parliament on Tuesday approved estimates amounting to more than GHS 5.3 billion for the Ministry of Roads and Highways to cover the period ending December 31, 2026.
The allocation is expected to significantly improve road networks across the country, thereby facilitating socio-economic activities and enhancing mobility for citizens.
The approval followed the presentation of a report by Mr Isaac Adjei Mensah, Chairman of the Roads and Transport Committee of Parliament, at the plenary.
He indicated that 137 staff vacancies across four agencies under the Ministry would be filled during the 2026 financial year.
Mr Adjei Mensah further noted that ongoing and new road contracts are projected to generate about 500,000 direct and indirect jobs, contributing to employment creation and economic growth.
However, Mr Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, raised concerns about the non-constitution of the Board for the Road Fund.
He cautioned that the absence of the Board was hindering payments to some road contractors, a situation he described as detrimental to the timely execution of projects.
The approval marks a major step in government’s efforts to expand and modernise Ghana’s road infrastructure, as stakeholders continue to call for stronger institutional measures to ensure effective implementation of road projects.
