The Gabriel Couto-Rango Consortium, the contractor who worked on the 67-kilometre Agona Nkwanta to Tarkwa road, has announced that it will undertake a six-month repair works on that stretch.
The road which was commissioned in 2024, had started deteriorating, sparking public outcry and raising questions about its durability.
However, Mr Theodore Adimazoya, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Gabriel Couto-Rango Consortium, said they would in the coming weeks begin rehabilitation works on the road to help enhance traffic flow and public safety.
Speaking at an axle control forum, in Tarkwa, the CEO attributed the rapid deterioration to excessive overloading by heavy-duty trucks, specifically those carrying manganese and bauxite, rather than faulty construction.
Mr Adimazoya asked motorists and commuters plying the road to expect massive traffic congestion during the period for the rehabilitation works.
He also encouraged road users on that stretch to reduce their speed to give the working team enough time to address most of the issues.
He stated that within the next month, the Consortium would collaborate with the Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, and other stakeholders to introduce traffic management measures to ensure safety users of the road.
Mr Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini, the Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways, stated that roads designed to last 10 to 15 years could not survive up to five years due to persistent overloading by drivers.
He said the technical assessment of the Agona Nkwanta to Tarkwa road indicated that it had been subjected to more than three times the loading it was designed to carry, resulting in rapid structural failure, premature cracking, and deformation of the pavement.
He, therefore, commended the contractor for agreeing to undertake the rehabilitation and repair works on the road at their own cost.
