Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Yaa Buakyiwah, the Ekumfi District Police Commander, has asked politicians and social commentators to refrain from the use of abusive language on political platforms and on air, ahead of the December polls.

She said in the interest of peace, activities of political parties must be carried out devoid of acts that could impact negatively on the current peaceful atmosphere in the country.

ASP Buakyiwah gave the advice at the Ekumfi  Inter-Party Dialogue Committee (IPDC) meeting, organised by the district office of the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) at Essarkyir.

The meeting dubbed, “Violations to be monitored and reported,” was attended by political parties, religious bodies, civil societies, chiefs, youth groups, and others who were given the opportunity to develop ideas and suggestions for the conduct of peaceful elections in the district.

The District Police Commander said the Police was unhappy with the attitude of some political parties, due to their utterances which was making their work burdensome and warned those involved to stop it.

She cautioned leaders of the various political parties to hold their tongues and refrain from acts which could lead to violence and called on the youth to also abide by the rules during the electioneering period, to cherish peace as an important prerequisite for development.

She gave an assurance that the Police was there to maintain peace and order and protect lives and property, hence nobody should take the law into their hands to avoid prosecution.

“All of us must be ambassadors of peace, monitor and report to the police all forms of violations for redress,” she added.

Nana Bambil Ansah V, the Ekumfi IPDC Chairman was worried with the animosity, intolerance and insults which have characterised Ghana’s political landscape and reminded all that the Country was attractive to investors and people of international repute because of the peaceful democratic dispensation.

He said it was important for politicians to uphold the values of fair play and proper conduct to forestall tension in the forthcoming general election.

He stated that a successful and peaceful election required that everybody played their roles devoid of animosity, and urged the youth to reject politicians who may attempt to recruit them to cause trouble.

Madam Cecilia Dam, the Ekumfi District Director of the Commission earlier stated that the concept of the IPDC, was to manage disputes, disagreements and conflicts which were likely to escalate into violence.

The meeting would come out with workable strategy to help curb any potential violence in the area.

She said Ghana had made some significant progress regarding free and fair elections since the fourth Republic, which must be sustained and appealed to the community to always embrace peace, to protect Ekumfi for development.
