The ceremony, which was performed by Burkina Faso’s current leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, stands as a tribute to the revolutionary leader, who was assassinated in 1987, widely believed to have been orchestrated by Western powers due to his uncompromising Pan-Africanist ideals.

The event drew dignitaries and Pan-African enthusiasts from across Africa, highlighting the late Sankara’s enduring legacy as a beacon of revolutionary leadership and selfless public service.

The late Sankara led Burkina Faso from 1983 to 1987, renaming the country from Upper Volta to Burkina Faso, meaning “Land of Upright People.”

The statue is in the newly opened Thomas Sankara Memorial and Museum, designed by renowned Burkinabe architect Francis Kéré, which symbolizes a resurgence of Sankarist ideals.
