The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has commended the Ghana Police Service for the arrest of a suspect in connection with the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.

The suspect, Daniel Owusu Koranteng, also known as Amakye, was arraigned on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, but was remanded to police custody by the Madina District Court.

He is set to reappear before the court on April 1, 2025.

In a statement issued to the Ghana News Agency, the GJA said it had been in contact with senior police officers to obtain details about the arrest and prosecution of the suspect.

“We particularly commend highly the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno and the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor for this giant step towards unraveling the barbaric murder of the investigative journalist,” the Association said.

“We note that more than six years after the assassination of Ahmed Suale on January 16, 2019, this is the first time the Police have made a significant impact in respect of bringing the suspected killers of the investigative journalist to face justice,” it added.

Despite the satisfaction with the latest development, the GJA urged the Police to ensure other suspects in the case are brought to justice.

“We hope this major breakthrough in the arrest and prosecution of Suspect Daniel Owusu Koranteng will only be the beginning of the long search for justice for Ahmed Suale and relief for media freedom advocates in Ghana and abroad, who have remained shocked by his murder,” Mr. Kofi Yeboah, GJA General Secretary, stated.

The death of Ahmed Suale and the delay in finding his killers has been described as a major setback for Ghana’s position on the World Press Freedom Index over the past six years.

Last month, the GJA issued an ultimatum, stating it would take the Ahmed Suale case to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Community Court of Justice by the end of March 2025 if there was no concrete attempt by the Police to find and prosecute the killers.

“In the coming days, we shall be engaging with the Police leadership for more details about the prosecution of the suspect and further investigations into the murder case, after which we shall update the public on our intended march to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice,” the Association noted.

“We shall also demand from the Police updates on investigations into the many cases of assault against journalists that have gone cold, including Latif Iddrisu’s case, which we had also earmarked for presentation to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice,” Mr. Yeboah added.

The GJA said it has informed its international partners, including the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), about the arrest and prosecution of Suspect Daniel Owusu Koranteng.

“The FAJ and IFJ have also indicated their resolve to take the Ahmed Suale case to other international forums to seek justice for the murdered investigative journalist,” the statement said.
