The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has addressed a viral video circulating on social media that allegedly shows unidentified Fire Service personnel assaulting a civilian.
The identity of the alleged victim has not yet been established.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday at the Kasoa New Market fire scene, reportedly involved confrontations between firefighters and civilians, including a journalist.
In a statement issued in Accra by Divisional Officer II Desmond Ackah, Head of Public Relations, and copied to the Ghana News Agency on Monday. the GNFS said it had confirmed that the alleged assault on the journalist was under police investigation, and that the Service would fully cooperate to establish the facts.
The statement said the video appeared to capture an altercation between firefighters and a suspected thief, who had reportedly attacked personnel along with a group of accomplices at the fire scene.
Management of the Service has constituted a committee to investigate the incident thoroughly and establish all relevant facts.
The GNFS emphasised that while it condemned attacks on its personnel, it equally condemn any form of physical or verbal assault on civilians by its staff, regardless of provocation.
The Service urged the public to remain calm and exercise restraint while investigations continue.
It reiterated its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and transparency, and pledged to cooperate with the media and relevant authorities to ensure accurate public information.
The Kasoa New Market fire, which began around 1600 hours on Sunday, was completely extinguished by 1000 hours on Monday.
The blaze destroyed an unspecified number of metallic and wooden stalls and their contents, mainly food items.
The swift and professional efforts of GNFS personnel led to the salvaging of thousands of stalls, preventing a total loss.
No casualties were recorded, the statement said.
Fire tenders from Kasoa and Swedru remain on standby to prevent any possible re-ignition as the cause of the fire is under investigation.
