Mr Abraham Boafo, the Oti Regional Secretary hopeful of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has called on the government to formalise and grant legal backing on the Fugu celebration day to ensure its continuity.
The Oti Regional Deputy Secretary of the NDC in an interview with Ghana News Agency on the fugu celebration day by the President John Dramani Mahama, said the decision should go beyond a symbolic gesture and be entrenched in law to sustain the initiative and maximise its benefits.
He proposed that the wearing of fugu should be made mandatory for workers in both the public and private sectors every Wednesday, stressing that such a policy would significantly boost the local textile and garment industry, particularly fugu producers and weavers.
Mr Boafo further explained that the nationwide display of fugu during today’s celebration clearly demonstrated the richness, beauty, and uniqueness of Ghanaian culture, describing the occasion as refreshing, colourful, and inspiring.
He therefore urged the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture to propose and present a legislative Instrument (LI) to parliament to ensure that the wearing of fugu becomes a mandatory national practice every Wednesday, not only for Ghanaians at home but also those in the diaspora.
Formalising the fugu wearing day would contribute meaningfully to job creation, support local artisans, and enhance Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product, he added.
