The Government is set to introduce a bill in Parliament to rename the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) as Accra International Airport to honour the Ga people, the original custodians of the land on which the airport is situated.
This was announced by Mr Mahama Ayariga, Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business in Parliament, during a media briefing by Parliamentary leadership at Parliament House on Tuesday.
He stated that the proposed name change was part of the government’s broader “resetting agenda” to restore historical and cultural identities.
Mr. Ayariga noted that the airport was originally known as Accra International Airport before it was renamed in honour of Lieutenant General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, a key figure in Ghana’s 1966 coup d’état.
“The government believes it is time to revert to the original name to appropriately acknowledge the Ga people, who are the rightful owners of the land,”Mr Ayariga said.
The Minister for Transport, Mr. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, is expected to lay the bill before Parliament during the First Meeting of the Second Session of Parliament.
The bill would seek parliamentary approval to effect the name change officially.
