Maame Afua Houadjeto, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority, has been named Chairperson of the Loal Organising Committee (LOC) for the 15th Africa Armwrestling Championship in Accra.
She was sworn in by Mr Kofi Adams, Minister of Sports and Recreation at his office in Accra.
The LOC Chair will be assisted by Dr. Kofi Addo-Agyekum from Kofikrom Pharmacy and Vice President of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation, ACI Gordon Saah from the Ghana Immigration Service, and Edwin Amankwah from the Ghana Olympic Committee.
The rest are Gideon Hammond from the National Sports Authority, Jessica Kwarteng from Ministry of Sports and Recreation and Andrew Ackah from the Advertising Association of Ghana.
Mr Charles Osei Asibey, President of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation thanked the minister and the ministry for their commitment and support for the sport and assured them of Team Ghana making the country proud.
He added that Ghana will be expecting over 200 athletes and officials from over 20 countries and would need the support of all for a successful event as the championship will serve as a qualifier to the 2027 African Games to be held in Egypt.
The Sports Minister urged the members of the LOC to work hard to give Ghana a befitting championship.
He said the LOC would ensure the championship is conducted according to Africa Armwrestling Federation rules and regulations while providing suitable venue, equipment, and facilities for athletes, officials, and spectators.
He added that they are to manage event logistics, including accommodation, transportation, and meals for athletes and officials and promote the championship through local media and marketing channels.
He again mentioned that they LOC must ensure safety and security for all participants and attendees and seek adequate sponsorship for the hosting of the championship.
Mr Kofi Adams noted that the LOC will also be responsible for Team Ghana’s successful participation and provide regular updates to the Africa Armwrestling Federation and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation on preparations and event progress and ensure doping control procedures are followed as per relevant anti-doping regulations.
Speaking on behalf of the members, Dr Kofi Addo-Agyekum, Vice Chairman of the LOC thanked the Ghana Armwrestling Federation for the confidence reposed in them and promised to make Ghana proud.
He called on all stakeholders to come on board for the host and win mantra to be a reality.
The 15th Africa Armwrestling Championship will be held in Accra between May 1-2, 2026.
