A statement by Dr Joseph Wemakor, CEO of HRRG and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra said the alleged assault occurred between April 29 and May 1, 2025, when Kofi was reportedly lured into a room under false pretenses by a group of young men.
“Once inside, he was subjected to a brutal attack while the assailants filmed the ordeal. The incident has been described as an attempt to “beat the gay out of him.”
The statement said Kofi sustained severe physical injuries and had since been suffering from intense psychological trauma, leading to multiple suicide attempts.
“His mother confirmed the events, painting a heartbreaking picture of the toll the attack has taken on her son and the fear now gripping their family.
“This is a tragic reminder of the persistent and dangerous climate of intolerance faced by the LGBTQ+ community in Ghana,”
“Kofi’s basic human rights have been violated in the most horrific way. The silence and inaction in the face of such brutality is unacceptable.”
In response, HRRG is demanding urgent intervention from state authorities and civil society. Their key calls to action include: Immediate Investigation – a thorough, impartial probe to identify the perpetrators and hold them accountable under the law.
“Protection and Safety – Immediate measures to safeguard Kofi and his family, including relocation and round-the-clock security if necessary, and omprehensive Support-ccess to psychological care and legal assistance to help Kofi recover from this deeply traumatic experience”.
Quoting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the organization emphasized: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” HRRG warned that a failure to respond decisively sends a dangerous message of tolerance for such hate-fueled acts.
The group also invoked Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s famous words: “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.” HRRG urged all stakeholders-government officials, law enforcement agencies, human rights bodies, and civil society organizations-to join in the fight for justice.
“Kofi’s life hangs in the balance,” the statement concluded. “He needs our collective support now more than ever.”
