Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Member of Parliament (MP) of Ketu South Constituency in the Volta Region, has donated 80 boxes of streetlights, totaling 160 units, to assembly members in the constituency to enhance public safety and night-time visibility.
The donation, which was presented to the Presiding Member of the Municipal Assembly, Mr Richard Nyavi, was to be distributed among 39 assembly members, with each receiving four streetlights for installation within their respective electoral areas.
Presenting the items on behalf of the MP, Mr Benbella Haliga, said the initiative formed part of the MP’s broader commitment to community safety, development, and improved living conditions for residents.
Mr Haliga conveyed Madam Gomashie’s assurance that the streetlights were intended to address long-standing concerns about poor lighting in several communities, especially along busy streets, and crime-prone areas.
According to the MP, the initiative would reduce night-time crime, improve road visibility, and minimize accidents, particularly in poorly lit communities and along major routes within the municipality.
To ease the burden on beneficiary communities, Madam Gomashie, has provided qualified electricians to carry out the installation of the streetlights free of charge at locations proposed by the Assembly Members.
This, she noted, would ensure proper installation while reducing additional costs to the communities.
The donation builds earlier streetlighting interventions undertaken by the MP across the constituency, notably along major routes such as the Tokor–Aflao border stretch and the Nkansah Hospital to Aveome Beach road.
Residents in some of the beneficiary communities, who spoke to the Ghana News Agency, welcomed the initiative, saying improved lighting would enhance security, facilitate night-time economic activities, and make roads safer for motorists and pedestrians.
