The figures, which exclude in-patients and those who underwent heart surgeries, also showed that within the same period, about 500 heart operations were performed in the theatre, while 150 cases were handled at the Centre’s Cath Lab, a specialised cardiovascular research facility.
Dr. Kow Entsua-Mensah, Director of the National Cardiothoracic Centre, said this at the launch of the 2025 World Heart Day celebration in Accra on Monday.
He said the Centre was already recording more cases this year, averaging about 350 new patients monthly.
“What we have noticed is that the cases are increasing not because the population is increasing, but because a lot more people are developing heart diseases,” he noted.
Dr. Entsua-Mensah stressed that the trend could be reversed if Ghanaians adopt healthier lifestyles, including at least 45 minutes of daily exercise, reduced carbohydrate intake, and diets rich in vegetables and proteins.
He also advised the public to cut down on processed foods, refined sugar and salt, drink more water, get adequate sleep, and walk at least 25 minutes daily to maintain a healthy heart.
He further called for prioritisation of heart health education, regular heart screening, and the equipping of health facilities nationwide with essential diagnostic equipment.
Dr. Entsua-Mensah advocated the establishment of a national heart institute to facilitate specialist training, conduct research into cardiovascular diseases, and intensify public education on heart health.
He urged support from the Ghana Medical Trust Fund to provide the Centre with modern equipment and ease the cost of care for patients.
World Heart Day, observed annually on September 29, aims to spark global conversations on cardiovascular health.
This year’s celebration, on the theme “Don’t Miss a Beat,” underscores the importance of keeping the heart healthy and active.
