The Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly (KKMA), has distributed various items and cash donations to persons living with disabilities (PWDs) in the municipality as part of efforts to empower them economically and promote self-reliance.

The items included deep freezers, display fridges, ovens, bags of charcoal, sewing machines, assorted provisions, and other goods tailored to the individual business needs of the beneficiaries and start-up capital from the disability common fund.

Mr Samuel Tetteh Kwashie Morton, KKMA Chief Executive (MCE), who led the distribution exercise, said the gesture reflected government’s commitment to supporting vulnerable groups, particularly persons with disabilities.

He said in previous years, the assembly provided direct cash support to PWDs; however, it decided to provide practical items based on the specific requests of the beneficiaries.

He said the items were meant to support small-scale businesses and improve the livelihoods of beneficiaries, urging them to use the items for their intended purposes, and stressed that the support was aimed at enabling them to become self-sufficient and to contribute meaningfully to their families and communities.

The MCE also advised them to engage with the appropriate authorities on issues concerning their welfare and avoid relying on unverified information or hearsay.

Madam Edna Parku, Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Social Welfare Officer, said a total of 21 persons benefited from the initiative and encouraged the beneficiaries to make good use of the items received, noting that the goal of the support was to help them become economically independent.

She pleaded with them to grow their businesses and take care of their households without depending entirely on others.

She also emphasized the importance of responsibility, urging the beneficiaries to be role models within their communities by proving that given the right support, persons with disabilities could be productive and successful.

Ms Regina Amanquah, Assembly Member for the Laaloi Electoral Area, expressed her profound gratitude to the MCE and the government for the timely disbursement of support items to persons with disabilities within the municipality.

She, however, appealed to the authorities to ensure that subsequent disbursements would not be delayed, as timely support was critical to sustaining the livelihoods of beneficiaries.
