Osabarima Ansah Sasraku, Mamfe and Kyidomhene of Akuapem, has marked the 2025 Asafo Sa, with a call for unity among traditional leaders, while reaffirming his commitment to improving education and investing in skills development at Mamfe.
Under the process, each of the chiefs, clan heads as well as invited dignitaries brings a pot of fresh palm wine poured into a giant pot and mixed.
After libation is poured the Mamfehene drinks first before its distributed to all present, signifying that there were no ill feeling reaffirming bonds for the new year.
The ceremony traditionally ushers in the Ohum festival, observed between December and January, based on the traditional calendar.
Addressing the gathering, the Mamfehene expressed concern about the ongoing chieftaincy dispute at the Akuapem Traditional Council, describing it as a setback to development.
“A nation that is not united does not develop,” he said, calling on Nananom to unite and work towards a lasting resolution to the dispute.
Touching on education, Osabarima Ansah Sasraku, said poor Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) performance in the area had informed his decision to prioritise education.
He assured that measures were being taken to ensure no child was left behind, adding that the traditional council was also investing in skills development through a community centre to equip the youth with employable skills.
“We will make sure that no child is left behind to reach their full potentia, We are also investing in skills development at our community centre where the youth can receive skills training,” whiles appealing for support to sustain the initiatives.
Mr George Opare Addo, Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, also underscored the importance of unity and peaceful coexistence among traditional leaders, noting that Akuapem was historically known for its peaceful nature.
He said the government had intensified efforts to combat drug abuse, which he described as a major threat to the youth, adding that his Ministry was working to clamp down on drug peddling activities.
The festival was attended by Nii Nortey Owuo IV, Osu Mantse; Kwesi Afreh Biney, Director-General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT); and Twumasi Ankrah, Director-General of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC).
Also present were Thomas Ampem Nyarko, Deputy Minister of Finance, and Sammy Awuku, Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, among other dignitaries.
