The Gender‑Based Violence Court has granted bail to John Odartey Lamptey, who was captured in a viral video assaulting his wife.
John was admitted to bail in the sum of GHC100,000 with two sureties, one to be justified.
The court, presided over by Mr Kwabena Kodua Obiri Yeboah, ordered him to stay away from the complainant and their children, and directed defence counsel to caution him on the consequences of disobeying the court’s orders.
His bail followed a renewed application by his lawyer, Mr. Frank Nikoi, who argued that the accused had been in custody for more than two weeks and that prosecution had already obtained all witness statements.
The prosecution, led by Ms. Ruth Debi, an Assistant State Attorney, opposed the application and urged the court to consider the facts and circumstances of the case.
Ms. Debi said the Office of the Attorney‑General had received the case docket and requested time to study it and issue advice.
She also pleaded with the court to restrict John, his family members, and assigns from approaching the victim.
John and his siblings, Grace Kamptey and Lewis Odartey Lamptey, were initially arraigned before the District Court at the Police Headquarters.
John and Grace were later arraigned before the Circuit Court, where Grace, 51, was granted GHC20,000 bail on December 4, 2025, with two sureties and reporting conditions.
The matter was adjourned to January 19, 2026.
The prosecution said the complainant, Harriet Amuzu, 32, is the wife of the accused, and the couple have two children.
According to prosecution, investigations showed that in July 2025, John physically assaulted Harriet and subjected her to acts of abuse, forcing her to flee to relatives for safety.
On November 15, 2025, John reportedly called Harriet, claiming their two‑year‑old child was unwell.
When she returned the next day, she found the child was not sick.
The following morning, as she attempted to pack her belongings, John allegedly seized and tore her clothes, locked the door and threatened her, saying, “You think I will let you go like that? I will kill you. I set a trap for you, and I will bury you at the cemetery behind us.”
The prosecution said John assaulted Harriet with various objects, as partly captured in a viral video, after which she escaped and went into hiding.
Grace, the second accused, allegedly threatened the witness who posted the video online, saying, “I give you three days, you will die.”
She was later arrested.
The prosecution said Harriet returned from hiding on November 20, 2025, and received medical examination and psychological counselling.
