Tamale-Ghana, Nov 11, GNA – Hajia Lariba Zuweira Abudu, Deputy Minister and Minister-designate for Gender, Children and Social Protection, has urged stakeholders to work hard to support government to close the gender gap in the country.
She said it was the responsibility of all stakeholders to support government to eliminate discrimination and violence against women and girls in society.
Hajia Abudu made the call in a speech read on her behalf during a zonal consultative meeting in Tamale to update the National Gender Policy 2015 and its strategic implementation plan.
The event, organised by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, and supported by ActionAid and UNFPA, was to discuss attainment of gender equality and equity between women and men, boys and girls with a coordinated response.
It was also to review and update the National Gender Policy and its Strategic Implementation Plan to enable the country to develop and own a national document that reflected the collective views, interests and aspirations of all.
Haji Abudu said stakeholders should support government to create a better environment for career women to promote their jobs.
She called on males to support in advocating in the achievement of gender equality, women empowerment and promoting the sexual and resproductive health rights of women and girls.
Madam Sheila Minkah Premo, Consultant for National Gender Policy and Strategic Implementation Plan, said government sought to re-emphasize its greater objectives to continue working tirelessly for the development of both men and women.
She indicated that the government had a policy that enhanced women’s rights and continued to provide a clear framework for addressing inequalities deeply rooted in society.
She said the National Gender Policy had been developed with comprehensive insights into the empowerment, rights and access to justice, leadership and accountable governance, gender roles and relations and economic opportunities for women.
