Mr Mohammed Adams Sukparu, Member of Parliament (MP) for Sissala West, has donated bags of rice and wax prints to 4,000 widows in the constituency as part of activities marking the New Year celebrations.
The donation, which took place at Gwollu under the MP’s Hope Project, comprised 1,000 bags of rice and 4,000 half-pieces of wax prints, with each widow receiving five kilogrammes of rice and a half-piece of wax print.
Addressing the widows during the presentation, Mr Sukparu said: “No matter how small it is, as a son of a widow, I am here to make the widows smile. I started this project last year.
“We will try our best to bring all the widows in Sissala West under one umbrella to help them also enjoy the yuletide.”
Mr Sukparu, who is also the Deputy Minister for Communications, Technology and Digital Innovations, said the initiative, launched last year, aims to support widows who often struggle to celebrate festive occasions.
He noted that many widows lack support during such seasons, a situation that motivated him to personally take up the challenge to make them smile.
The MP pledged to unite all widows in Sissala West under one umbrella to ensure regular engagement and sustained support.
He further announced plans to expand the Hope Project beyond food and clothing donations to include healthcare and other needs of the widows.
Describing his commitment, Mr Sukparu said he had taken it upon himself to stand in for the husbands the widows have lost.
He reiterated that the New Year donation was meant to ensure that every widow in Sissala West could celebrate the season with dignity.
He stressed that the Hope Project was not a new initiative but an ongoing commitment he intends to sustain and expand with support from other well-meaning individuals.
Mr Sukparu called for support from individuals, philanthropists and organisations for the cause.
Some beneficiary widows expressed gratitude, saying: “You have embraced us as your beloved wives and we sincerely wish for you the best of the season.”
The support, according to the MP, consisted of donations from friends, totalling about GHS600,000.00.
