“Overpopulation and human activity are putting pressure on God’s creation,” she asserted.
Mad. Ohene stated this at the official opening of the 15th Synod of the Ho East Presbytery of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana at Abutia Teti in the Ho West District of the Volta region as the Guest Speaker.
The three-day Synod is on the theme “care for creation: the task and mission of the church.”
It was being attended by about 200 delegates including Presbytery executives, Pastors, Catechists, Presbyters, Treasurers, heads of the Church’s institutions and representatives of groups in the Church.
Mad. Ohene noted that the land which the country had at independence when her population was five million was the same as the population was 32 million now and would remain the same for posterity.
She cautioned that humans should not be responsible and care for themselves alone but also other creations of God like the earth and other things on it.
She said the behaviour of even Christians showed that they were not at ease with nature.
She noted that “though God gave man dominion over his creation we should not forget that each creation depends on each other for survival.”
“As humans who God gave dominion over His creation, we should do things in an orderly manner and give other creatures space to survive,” she stated.
She said none of God’s creation was a mistake but constituted His plan to make a balance.
Mad. Ohene said climate and other environmental hazards were because of the destruction being caused by man to creation which were to make his survival complete.
“The ecosystem was completely destroyed by man leading to the extinction of some animal spices, fishes, plants, and some creeping creatures.
She called on Christians to be in the forefront of the fight against all forms of environmental degradation.
There was a three-day crusade and door to door evangelism as a prelude to the Synod.
The Synod will be rounded off with a thanksgiving service on Sunday.
