A 21-year-old driver, Prince Owusu, accused of stealing two mobile phones from a policeman, has pleaded with an Accra Circuit Court for leniency, claiming that he did not know the victim was a policeman.

Owusu, along with his accomplice Abu, who remains at large, has been charged with conspiring to steal a Samsung Galaxy A04e phone worth GHC1,800 and a Nokia phone valued at GHC180, both belonging to Detective Sergeant Ben Abdallah Anaaya.

Owusu has denied the charges and is currently in police custody until December 30, 2024.

During proceedings, Police Chief Inspector Ramatu Asumah explained that the complainant, Detective Sergeant Abdallah, works at the Adabraka Police Station and lives in Weija.

On November 22, 2024, at around 1900 hours, Anaaya was driving home from work when he was rear-ended by Owusu and Abu near the Neoplan bus stop at Kwame Nkrumah Circle.

When Anaaya checked the situation, he saw one of the men taking his two mobile phones, which had been placed on his lap, before they sped off towards Neoplan station.

Anaaya, aided by an eyewitness, followed the suspects to the Neoplan station, where Owusu was apprehended with the stolen phones, though Abu managed to escape.

The police later found Anaaya’s two SIM cards in Owusu’s possession.

The prosecution stated that Owusu also confessed to the crime in his cautioned statement.

After further investigation, he was formally charged with the offenses and brought before the court.
