Ho-Ghana, Aug. 6, GNA – The Rotary Club of Ho has donated food and other relief items to support victims of  recent  floods that affected more than a thousand people in the Volta Regional capital.

Heavy rains on Saturday, July 8, flooded hundreds of homes and properties and caused damages running into millions of cedis in parts of the Ho Municipality.

Dr. Alphonse Dzakpasu, President of the Club, during the presentation, said that members were moved by the news of the city’s devastation, and as a service-oriented organisation, found the need to support.

He said the Club had mobilised contributions from both members and non-members as part of its community and economic development focus to support the victims.

“We saw pictures and videos of the flood devastation and we decided to mobilise solidarity from Rotarians and non-Rotarians to see what could be done,” Dr. Dzakpasu stated.

The Club handed over 75 bags of rice, cooking oil and toiletries to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

Madam Ivy Amewugah, Regional Director of the Disaster Management Organisation, thanked Rotary for the compassion.

“We are glad that calls that we made through the media asking for support from organisations for the flood victims have been heard and you are here to give out,” she said, and assured that the donations would benefit the affected.

The Regional Director said most victims had recovered from the devastation and had returned to their normal lives, noting also that the NADMO continued to receive support from various quarters.

She said the threat of rain floods lingered as the rainy season neared its peak, and therefore the Organisation was working with various stakeholders to minimise the risks.

Foster Anani, Unit Committee Member of Sokode, the beneficiary community, said some victims remained displaced and were counting losses, and therefore the donation was a welcome intervention for the community, and thanked Rotary for the initiative.

Members of the Club present numbering more than 20, joined the NADMO to distribute the items after the handing over.

The Club has become one of several to support the victims, and the donation came barely weeks after Sunon Asogli Power Limited presented food items and an amount of GHC 150,000 to establish an environmental sustainability fund for Ho.

Rotary is an established supporter of communities, with several bold imprints in the Ho Municipality and the Region.

These include water and sanitation projects and interventions, and there is also contributions towards heath delivery, notable recently the establishment of a fully equipped mobile clinic for the Ho Teaching Hospital.
