Football fans in Anloga and surrounding communities have expressed mixed reactions following Senegal’s dramatic victory over Morocco to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
These reactions were expressed on Monday morning when the Ghana News Agency (GNA) engaged some football enthusiasts to gauge public opinion after Sunday night’s final between the Teranga Lions of Senegal and the Atlas Lions of Morocco.
Many fans disclosed that they had thrown their support behind Senegal from the group stages, citing the team’s consistency, resilience, and tactical discipline throughout the tournament.
They said Senegal’s ability to remain composed in high-pressure moments ultimately set them apart in the final.
“Senegal showed character from the first game to the final. They were disciplined, focused, and deserved the trophy,” a fan remarked.
Others attributed their loyalty to Senegal to talismanic forward Sadio Mané, who many believe could be making his final AFCON appearance.
The fans argued that the former African Footballer of the Year deserved to crown his illustrious international career with another continental title.
“This could be Sadio Mané’s last AFCON. He has given everything to Senegal, and winning this trophy is a best reward for his service,” James Koffi, supporter told GNA.
Some Senegal fans, however, criticised the officiating during the final, insisting that the referee was unfair to the Teranga Lions, particularly during key moments in regulation time and stoppage periods.
Meanwhile, a section of football followers in also expressed disappointment over Morocco’s failure to lift the trophy, arguing that the North African giants were the better side for large portions of the tournament.
One fan pointed to the heavy investments made by the Moroccan Football Federation in infrastructure, player development, and tournament preparations, suggesting that such commitment deserved continental success.
“Morocco invested massively in their football, and based on their performances, they were worthy champions,” Noel, a fan noted.
The highly charged final was decided in extra time after a 0–0 stalemate at the end of regulation time. Drama unfolded in second-half stoppage time when Brahim Díaz, the Real Madrid forward, missed a crucial penalty after his effort was saved by Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
The penalty, awarded following a VAR review after Díaz was judged to have been fouled by El Hadji Malick Diouf, sparked intense controversy and debate.
The penalty decision got the Senegal players nearly boycotting the game but later resumed play.
Fans sympathetic to Morocco argued that the series of contentious decisions in the latter stages of the game demotivated the Atlas Lions, affecting their concentration and momentum going into extra time.
The decisive moment arrived in the 105th minute when Pape Gueye unleashed a thunderous strike into the top corner, scoring the only goal of the match and sealing Senegal’s victory in a tense and energy-sapping encounter.
The 2025 AFCON final, played on Sunday night, lived up to its billing as two of Africa’s football powerhouses went head-to-head. Senegal and Morocco displayed immense determination, tactical discipline, and physical intensity in a tightly contested match that kept fans on the edge of their seats.
While Morocco were seeking their first AFCON title in 57 years, Senegal were chasing a historic second continental crown.
The victory ultimately handed Senegal their second AFCON title, further cementing their status as one of Africa’s modern football giants.
Despite the heartbreak, the final had been widely hailed as one of the most dramatic and fiercely contested AFCON deciders in recent history, leaving football fans across Africa and the World divided but deeply entertained.
