Mr Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader on Tuesday, criticised the government’s handling of social interventions and taxation, describing its approach as “incoherent,” raising concerns about policy consistency.
Speaking to the media in Parliament House at the Leaders’ Media Briefing, Mr Afenyo-Markin said several government programmes were struggling by the end of 2025, highlighting the need for a clear economic and social policy framework.
“Apart from the GoldBod, which has helped stabilise the cedi, in other sectors like agriculture, there hasn’t been any major improvement. Even flagship programmes such as the 24-Hour Economy have yet to show substantial results,” he said.
The Leaders’ Media Briefing is a periodic engagement between the Leadership of the House and the Parliamentary Press Corps (PPC) at the beginning of every Meeting of Parliament to outline the framework of the Meeting.
It also serves as a platform of interaction between the Leaders, the Media Relations Department of Parliament, and the PPC.
Mr Afenyo-Markin, also the New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament for Effutu urged the government to implement a comprehensive policy direction, particularly on taxation and economic growth, to deliver tangible benefits across key sectors.
“We believe the government’s approach to social interventions and taxation has been incoherent. By the end of 2025, certain programmes were struggling, and while the NDC has condemned some of our government’s stance in the past, nearly a year in office, we have not seen a major shift in governance,” he added.
