She said “In teaching, character matters just as competence. A teacher who has competence but does not have good character is not a good teacher…be a good role model and mentors to you students.
Prof. Edu-Buandoh said this at the 17th graduation ceremony as well as the third congregation for trained teachers and Bachelor of Education cohort respectively at the Holy Child College of education in Fijai in the Western Region.
Teaching, she explained was a profession that demanded empathy and resilience and commended Holy Child College for cultivating leadership skills in the teachers trained.
Dr. Francis Hull Adam, Principal of the College noted how the academic performance over the past three years had seen a tremendous improvement. “The final results of the 2024
Graduands showed an impressive leap compared to last year’s outcomes. In 2023, the college recorded 25 First Class Graduands across all programmes”.
“This year, with a graduating class of 325 students, the number of First-Class Graduands has increased to 41, representing a remarkable 64 per cent increase”, he disclosed.
Dr. Adam commended the remarkable performance of the College’s Early Childhood Education Graduands; “In 2024, only two Graduands from this programme obtained First Class honours”.
“This year, that number has risen dramatically to 14 and that the overall best Graduands emerged from the Early Childhood Education group”, he indicated.
The College Principal praised the University of Cape Coast (UCC) for offering effective mentorship to the college over the years, conducting comprehensive monitoring and evaluation activities every semester.
He mentioned the completion of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus Hall, with students’ capacity of 250, and called for an additional floor to make Kathleen Marie Hall of residence a three-storey, which was formerly a two-storey hall. Dr. Adams noted that the College was however, confronted with a number of challenges including over aged operational vehicles, poor internal road network, Inadequate halls of residence for students and Inadequate accommodation for staff among others.
To the Students, he advised: “As you stand on the threshold of a new chapter, you should celebrate your accomplishments, be proud of your achievements, and remember to thank those who supported you along the way”.
