Mr Joseph Bukari Nikpe, the Minister of Transport, Thursday paid a working visit to the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) to inspect ongoing expansion and rehabilitation works at the Kotoka International Airport.

The visit forms part of the government’s broader agenda to transform Ghana into a competitive aviation hub within the West African sub-region.

A key highlight of the visit was the strategic reconfiguration of Terminal 2, which is being repurposed to help ease congestion at Terminal 3, especially during peak travel hours.

Mr Nikpe said the inspection was necessary to move beyond boardroom discussions and ensure the delivery of aviation infrastructure met required standards and timelines.

“We…have been talking about how to expand and improve upon our airport facilities to create that kind of regional and international connectivity,” he said.

“We cannot always sit in offices and talk about improvement without getting to the ground.”

Mr Nikpe said the visit was to observe firsthand how contractors were executing their tasks, particularly regarding expansion, construction, and upgrading of existing facilities to meet growing demand.

“We are looking at how they are going about the construction, how they are improving the facilities to position us to actually be the hub of West Africa,” he added.

The Minister expressed satisfaction with the pace of work, describing it as encouraging.

“Rehabilitation sometimes takes a lot of time, but they are done with the first phase. They are entering into the second phase,” he noted.

“We are hopeful that within the end of year or early next year the whole facility should have been totally renovated and expanded to take care of our traveling passengers.”

“If you visit Terminal 3 during rush hours, you will realise we have congestion. So, what I have done now is to decongest Terminal 3 into Terminal 2. We have positioned Terminal 2 into two phases – one for domestic operations and the other, where we are currently standing, for international services,” he explained.

Mr Nikpe said the modification would allow some traffic from Terminal 3 to be redirected to Terminal 2, providing more space and comfort for passengers.

“This place is now designed to take care of international travellers, and the other side will cater for our domestic travellers,” he added.

“The purpose is to decongest Terminal 3 and open up the airport to take on larger volumes of passengers and cargo.“

The Minister also visited the site of ongoing construction of GACL’s new 11-storey administrative head office complex, expected to be completed within 24 months.

The structure is designed to house offices, meeting rooms, and multipurpose spaces for effective corporate operations.

He said the office project, currently in its second phase, was part of a larger rehabilitation and improvement agenda.

Mr Nikpe concluded his visit with an interaction with staff of the Ghana Airports Company Limited, commending them for their dedication to duty.

He urged them to continue with the commitment to delivering quality services to travellers and stakeholders across the aviation sector.
