Transport operators in Tamale reduce fares by up to 10 per cent

Some public transport operators in Tamale have reduced fares by 10 and five per cent instead of the 15 per cent announced by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) last week.

Some of the transport operators are yet to fully comply with the new fare directives by GPRTU.

Some of the drivers, who spoke to Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Tamale on Monday, explained that their decision not to comply with the mother union’s instruction was because of high cost of spare parts.

Mr Ali Mumuni, Station Officer at Kpandi lorry station in Tamale on behalf of the drivers appealed to spare parts dealers to reduce prices of spare parts to enable them to also reduce the fares to 15 per cent.

Some passengers, who spoke to the GNA, said they were not happy about the refusal of some drivers to comply with the new fares’ directive by the GPRTU.

Alhaji Salifu Mashahad, Northern Regional Secretary at the GPRTU who spoke to GNA said the Union has served its members letters since last week to reduce transport fares to the recommended 15 per cent.

He added that the Union was following up to ensure that by the end of this week all the transport operators would have complied with the new transport fare directives.
