Two renowned media professionals, Mr Prosper Kuorsoh and Mr Seidu Bomanjor, are contesting for the Upper West Regional Chairmanship of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA).

Both contenders are respected figures within the regional media landscape, bringing years of experience, leadership, and dedication to journalism in the Upper West Region.

Mr Kuorsoh is a former Editor at the Upper West Regional office of the Ghana News Agency (GNA) and currently a communication lecturer at the SDD University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SDD-UBIDS).

He is also the Upper West Regional Secretary of the GJA and has served in that position for two consecutive terms, exhibiting commitment to promoting journalistic excellence in the region and beyond.

On the other hand, Mr Bomanjor, a broadcast journalist with the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) and currently the Upper West Regional Vice Chairman of the GJA, is noted for his stance on media and journalistic excellence.

Both candidates have presented clear visions for the development of journalism, the media landscape, and the GJA in the region.

In an interview with the GNA, Mr Bomanjor pledged to champion a policy of inclusion and regional appeal for the association and promote transparency within his leadership.

“If you look at the GJA over the years, the membership is skewed towards one area, which is the Wa Municipal, but almost all the districts now have radio stations and we have qualified people there, so if God’s willing, things work out we will look at it”, he explained.

Mr Bomanjor added that, if elected, he would also ensure that decisions were inclusive, encompassing relevant ideas from all journalists and media practitioners.

On his part, Mr Kuorsoh had pledged to deepen professionalism among journalists and media practitioners in the region through lobbying and scouting for support and partnering with the national GJA executives to organise regular capacity-building for the members.

“If I am given the node, I will promote the welfare of journalists and media practitioners in the region by establishing a journalists’ welfare fund”, he explained.

Mr Kuorsoh also expressed hope the hope that he would be able to partner with the GJA Regional Chairmen in the five regions of the north to form a regional bloc of the association to solicit support and sponsorships for building the capacity of media practitioners in the area.

He also pledged to form sub-committees within the association to support the Regional Executive Committee in running the association in the region.

He also pledged to run an open-door administration and ensure that qualified journalists and media practitioners in the region join the association.

Additionally, Mr Kuorsoh promised to facilitate the establishment of a student chapter of the GJA at the SDD-UBIDS as part of efforts to enhance the association’s reach.

It was anticipated that the keen contest between Mr Prosper Kuorsoh and Mr Seidu Bomanjor would stimulate brilliant ideas for improving media practice in the Upper West Region.

Meanwhile, Mr Naziru Alhassan of TV Africa and Mr Awudu Ivan Domasaa, a freelance journalist, are contesting for the Regional Secretary and Regional Treasurer positions, respectively.

The GJA was expected to hold its election on 30th June 2025 to elect new leaders to man the association for the next three years.
