Accra-Ghana, Dec. 17, GNA – Coach Annor Walker has set sights on the final spot in the upcoming 2023 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) to be staged in Algeria from January 13 to February 4, 2023.

The Black Galaxies, also known as the local “Black Stars” have been camping at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence at Prampram preparing for the biennial competition reserved for domestic players plying their trade at their respective local leagues.

The Black Galaxies would be returning to the competition, after missing out in the last three editions due to the team’s inability to qualify.

Ahead of the tourney, Coach Walker, who guided the team to pick a slot at the expense of Nigeria last month via penalties after the two-leg qualifier ended in a 2-2 draw aggregate, said the team was eying to qualification to the final stages.

“My target is to get to the finals and if it’s the will of God that I should win the tournament, I would be more grateful to the Almighty. But my target, for now, is to get to at least the final of the competition,” he said.

On the team’s performance ahead of the competition, the Black Galaxies engaged in friendly matches against top domestic clubs Accra Hearts of Oak and Legon Cities, where Annor’s charges defeated both clubs by a 2-1 and 2-0 score line respectively.

However, the veteran coach is not satisfied with the results, saying the Black Galaxies was a team in progress.

“We beat Accra Hearts of Oak and Legon Cities, this tells you that the team is getting to where we want to get to. It’s an improved side, just that to me, I will not say we are there yet.

“We are still on course and we are still working hard to be better than what we are now until we leave here to continue our training outside Ghana,” he added.

Ghana, a two-time finalist in 2009 and 2014 would be hoping to clinch the ultimate trophy to show the world the depth of talent that abounds in the country.

Ghana is in a tricky group alongside defending champions, Morocco, Sudan, and Madagascar in Group C.
