Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the newly elected Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has pledged to introduce reforms aimed at restoring discipline across the party following his victory in a hotly contested presidential primary.

Addressing jubilant supporters at the NPP headquarters in Accra on Saturday, January 31, shortly after being declared winner of the contest, Dr Bawumia called on party members—particularly the youth—to rally behind him in upholding the principles and values of the party’s founding fathers.

“The future of the party rests on the energies of the youth,” he said, urging all members to put aside their differences and unite toward securing victory in the 2028 general elections.

He appealed for renewed commitment, saying: “It is time to let go of all reservations and work together. We must show resilience and fortitude for the difficult battles ahead.”

Dr Bawumia assured party faithful that he would welcome ideas from former aspirants and other stakeholders to build a formidable front capable of unseating the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He also called on members to respect the decision of the delegates, adding that unity had historically been the basis for the party’s electoral successes.

He expressed gratitude to the Almighty God, the Electoral Commission, the Ghana Police Service, the NPP Presidential Election Committee, the Council of Elders, and all stakeholders for ensuring a smooth and successful election.

He further thanked his campaign team and his wife, Samira, for their unwavering support throughout the campaign period.

Earlier, Mr Samuel Kwakwa, Deputy Director of Electoral Services at the Electoral Commission, declared Dr Bawumia the winner after he secured 110,643 votes, representing 56.46 per cent of the 195,901 valid ballots cast.

The results of the other contestants were as follows: Kennedy Ohene Agyapong – 46,554 votes (23.74%); Dr Bryan Acheampong – 36,303 votes (18.52%); Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum – 1,999 votes (1.02%); and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong – 402 votes (0.21%). Rejected ballots totaled 561, representing 0.29 per cent.

Dr Bawumia’s victory, which followed months of intense nationwide campaigning, positions him as the party’s torchbearer for the next general elections.

Supporters at the party headquarters hailed his message of inclusiveness and determination.
