The Bui Power Authority, the managers of the Bui Generating Station (BGS) in the Bono Region has inaugurated a 45 Megawatts (MW) solar project to add to the nation’s renewable energy mix.

The project has a 40MW land-based solar plant and five megawatts floating solar farm, constructed on the Bui Dam Reservoir, which is the first of its kind and the largest in Africa.

Mr Samuel Kofi Dzamesi, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the BPA also inaugurated a multi-purpose office complex of the Authority and said construction work on an additional 10 MW floating solar farm was also progressing steadily.

He said the “Fred Oware Block” was named after Mr Fred Oware, a former CEO of the BPA for his dedication and hard work towards improved infrastructure development around the BGS and served as a centralized hub for the operational and administrative functions of Authority, embodying sustainability, and innovation.

Equipped with solar panels, green spaces, and energy-efficient ventilation systems, the facility promotes renewable energy use while optimizing energy consumption.

It also ensures a secure and safe work environment with controlled access systems, a secured perimeter, and compliance with international safety standards

Speaking at a short ceremony held at Bui in the Banda District of the Region, Mr Dzamesi said the Authority was spearheading solar energy projects aimed at expanding sustainable power generation.

That, he explained, was in line with the nation’s commitment to increasing renewable energy to 10 percent of its energy mix by 2030.

“These solar plants not only support Ghana’s climate goals by reducing dependence on fossil fuels but also help address energy needs in the Northern regions, fostering industrial growth and enhancing energy resilience,” Mr Dzamesi stated.

“The commissioning of the aforementioned projects, here at the Bui Generating Station is a testament to the progress that has been made by the Authority, it also reminds us that much work lies ahead as the energy landscape continues to evolve”.

Mr Dzamesi stressed the need for the BPA to remain at the forefront by adopting innovative and sustainable solutions to meet Ghana’s growing energy needs.

Madam Justina Owusu-Banahene, the Bono Regional Minister, noted that the improved in infrastructure development in the enclave reflected BPA’s commitment to institutional growth and operational excellence, saying the Authority’s commitment to development remained exemplary.

She lauded the solar projects, saying they would enhance the reliability of the nation’s power supply, stimulate industrial growth, and attract further investment into the region.

Mad Owusu-Banahene encouraged stakeholders, the government, private sector, and communities to continue to work hand in hand to support BPA in its mission to light up the path to a sustainable and prosperous future.

Mr Oware, a former CEO of the Authority said renewable energy remained the cornerstone of the nation’s development and lauded the Authority’s commitment towards expanding the country’s renewable energy mix.

Nana Kwadwo Wuo II, the Chief of Bui commended the BPA for its efforts and urged the Authority to do more to enable the nation to attain the 10 percent target of the solar and wind mix by 2030.
