Court remands welder in alleged defilement case

The Amasaman Circuit Court has remanded a 29‑year‑old welder, Etornam Wonder, for allegedly defiling a 15‑year‑old girl.

Wonder pleaded not guilty to having carnal knowledge of the girl but was denied bail after prosecution prayed the Court to remand him for his own safety.

Chief Inspector Salifu Nashiru told the Court, presided over by Justice Alexander Graham, a High Court Judge with additional responsibility at the Circuit Court, that there was tension in the area where the alleged incident occurred and granting bail could escalate the situation.

Counsel for Wonder prayed the Court to grant bail, arguing that the offence was bailable and that his client was not a flight risk, not known to the law, and would not interfere with police investigations.

The Court asked Wonder, “Do you have a problem with the victim’s mother?” to which he replied in the negative, stating, “I have been working for the victim’s mother as a welder.”

The Court ruled that the bail application was premature and remanded Wonder into police custody until January 29, 2026.

Presenting the facts, Chief Inspector Nashiru said the complainant, a trader, lived with her daughter, the victim, at Adjen Kotoku, while Wonder also resided in the same area.

On January 2, 2026, at about 1830 hours, the complainant sent the victim to buy mosquito coil, but she did not return.

The complainant asked her other children, one of whom said Wonder had called the victim to his room.

The complainant went to Wonder’s house but did not find her daughter.

She later hid in her room and observed through her window until about 2030 hours when she saw the victim coming out of Wonder’s room.

When questioned, the victim told her mother that Wonder had asked her to check on his stew while he fetched water.

Once inside, Wonder locked the door, pulled her into his bedroom, and had sexual intercourse with her.

On January 3, 2026, the complainant lodged a formal complaint at the Dome Sampaman Police Station.

A medical report form was issued, and the victim was sent to hospital for examination and treatment.

Two days later, the complainant returned the endorsed medical form, after which Wonder was arrested, cautioned, and charged.
