Dakar–Senegal, Oct. 27, MNN – The ‘Institut Pasteur de Dakar’ (IPD) a Senegalese private foundation in the public interest with the mission to advance public health and well-being in Africa has launched the 2023 Grand Challenges Annual Meeting will take place in Dakar, Senegal.

The Grand Challenges is a family of initiatives fostering innovation to solve key global health and development problems. Each initiative is an experiment in the use of challenges to focus innovation on making an impact.

Grand Challenges Senegal is, therefore, soliciting its first round of proposals from innovators working across Africa and African scientists in the diaspora on interventions to enhance epidemic intelligence, surveillance, and outbreak response, a statement copied to the Myliberty News Network (MNN) in Tema-Ghana.

At the launch, Dr. Amadou Alpha Sall, IPD Chief Executive Officer stated: “I am thrilled. This is an amazing opportunity to catalyze initiatives rooted in the reality of the African context that will have the potential to transform how we manage epidemics.

“We look forward to welcoming the Grand Challenges community in Dakar.”

The launch proceeded with President Macky Sall of Senegal’s announcement at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Grand Challenges Annual Meeting in Brussels.

“The Grand Challenges Senegal curated by the Institut Pasteur de Dakar (IPD) has today launched its inaugural call for proposals,” he said.

Epidemic threats are increasing in their frequency, intensity, and severity – yet the world remains woefully exposed and unprepared.

Initiatives fostering innovation in this area will be financially supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Grand Challenges Canada, and the Government of Senegal.

The Institut Pasteur de Dakar (IPD) is a Senegalese private foundation in the public interest with the mission to advance public health and wellbeing in Africa by conducting research, providing training and education, sharing scientific knowledge, and advancing biotechnology.

Since its founding in 1896, IPD has been at the forefront of the fight against infectious diseases in West Africa. IPD is one of the four World Health Organization-prequalified manufacturers to supply yellow fever vaccines to United Nations Agencies.
