The Keta Municipal Hospital in the Volta Region has commissioned a new Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to enhance the quality of healthcare delivery for residents of Keta, Anloga, and surrounding communities.

The newly established ICU, a specialised department within the hospital, is expected to deliver advanced, life-saving care to critically ill patients who require close monitoring and intensive medical intervention.

Dr. Kofi Karikari Bonsu, Medical Superintendent of the hospital, speaking at the commissioning ceremony, described the facility as a “lifeline” and a symbol of renewed hope for critically ill patients in the southern part of the Volta Region.

“This ICU is not just a facility—it is a critical advancement in healthcare delivery that brings lifesaving care closer to the people,” he stated.

Dr. Bonsu explained that the unit was made possible through the repurposing of a section of the Infectious Disease Centre (IDC), which was generously handed over to the hospital by the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service.

He noted the acute shortage of ICU beds in the region, citing that the Ho Teaching Hospital has only five, while Keta Municipal Hospital now has three.

Dr. Bonsu commended the management and ICU team of Ho Teaching Hospital for their expertise and support in setting up the unit and preparing staff.

Dr. Emmanuel Atsu Dordo, Volta Regional Director of Health and Special Guest at the ceremony, applauded the hospital’s planning committee led by Administrator Alhaji Farouk Iddrissu, as well as the entire hospital staff, for their collaborative effort to uplift the facility’s healthcare standards. He pledged continued support and encouraged the public to utilise the hospital’s services for better health outcomes.

Torgbui James Ocloo V, ‘Dufia’ of Keta and chairman of the event, welcomed the establishment of the ICU and urged staff to treat critical cases with utmost care and professionalism to ensure patient safety.

Some staff and patients expressed excitement about the new unit in interviews with the Ghana News Agency, praising management for their dedication and hard work.

GNA also gathered that the ICU will play a pivotal role in delivering timely and effective interventions for patients in urgent need of critical care.
