The Ghana Police Service has foiled an attempted robbery involving a gold consignment valued at GHC1,350,343.53 through a coordinated, intelligence-led operation.

Three suspects – Adams Zibo, Massawud Yussif, and Kenneth Khartey – were arrested for allegedly conspiring to rob Mr Rashid, a consultant with a legally registered mining firm in Ghana.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Lydia Yaako Donkor, Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), disclosed at a news briefing that the suspects included the gold dealer’s driver and a man who posed as the dealer’s bodyguard.

The group had planned to carry out the robbery during a scheduled gold delivery by the company on 26 June 2025.

DCOP Donkor said the Police Special Support Unit monitored the suspects’ movements along the Accra–Akuapim–Mamfe road, where the operation was initially expected to take place.

However, one of the suspects communicated a change in route to the others, diverting the operation to the Koforidua–Aburi stretch instead of the originally planned Koforidua–Nsawam road.

Police surveillance identified Zibo and Yussif, who were travelling in an unregistered Hyundai vehicle on the Manfe–Koforidua road, along with two motorbikes trailing the Land Cruiser transporting the target and the gold consignment.

After failing to execute the robbery, Zibo and Yussif were traced and arrested at East Legon.

DCOP Donkor said investigations revealed the suspects had conspired about a month prior and had provided logistics, including vehicles and funds intended for the procurement of AK-47 rifles.

One of the accomplices was also allegedly tasked with receiving and facilitating the sale of the stolen gold.

She added that during the investigation, the suspects claimed one Adu Gyawu, arrested alongside them, was not involved in the plot.

He was subsequently granted bail.

DCOP Donkor said the suspects would be arraigned upon the conclusion of further investigations.

She urged the public to engage the police whenever necessary to ensure their safety and the smooth conduct of business activities.
