The Fund will cover the children’s education from primary school to tertiary or technical training, healthcare, including medical insurance and specialized care when needed and welfare support such as clothing, shelter, and essential living expenses.
The President announced the establishment of the Fund during the State Funeral for the eight victims, held at the Black Star Square in Accra.
He expressed gratitude to Stanbic Bank for opening an account with an initial contribution of GH₵ 500,000.
The President also assured that the Government would make an immediate seed contribution to the Fund and would operationalize and publish a detailed framework for its management within the next 30 days.
This initiative aims to provide long-term support to the children affected by the tragic incident.
“My office will ensure that the Children’s Support Fund is sustained for the long term with annual public reporting on how it has been used,” he said.
“Furthermore, we’ll create channels for contributions from our citizens, from corporate organizations, professional associations and our international partners.
“Imagine the impact it will have on each of these children who have been left behind by the death of their parents.”
“Let us also leave our eight comrades today with a promise that their children will not be alone and that they’ve got us and we’ll always be there to share. We will walk with them into their future.”
The President on the behalf of the Government and People of Ghana, expressed their deepest gratitude to the bereaved families.
He further thanked them for their courage and dignity in the face of the unimaginable loss.
The President expressed gratitude to the Ghana Armed Forces and Emergency Services for their swift and professional response to the accident.
He also expressed gratitude to the nation’s religious leaders and traditional authorities, to members of the diplomatic corps, civil society and citizens who were the very pillars of the nation.
“I say thank you for praying with us, for comforting the families and for offering every form of support to ensure that we made it through the darkest days of this tragedy.”
President Mahama also thanked his colleagues the heads of state from around the world, including Africa and West Africa, who either visited or gave him personal calls or sent messages of condolence and support on behalf of their people; stating that “we extend our deepest gratitude”.
“It is this solidarity that affirms the strength of our national and international spirit”.
The President prayed that the State Funeral would bring closure to a grieving nation and that a new dawn would break in which they would look forward with pride as Ghanaians to a prosperous nation.
“And that today we pray that this will be the beginning as the almighty God heals our land.”
The eight distinguished Ghanaians who lost their lives while on an official duty in the August 6, 2025, military helicopter crash at Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region include Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence; and Alhaji Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Member of Parliament for Tamale Central and Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology.
Others are Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Mr Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress; and Mr Samuel Aboagye, Deputy Director-General of National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).
The rest are Squadron Leader Peter Anala, Flying Officer Twum Ampadu and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, all of the Ghana Air Force.
Alhaji Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed and Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna were laid to rest on Sunday, 10th August, 2025, at the new military cemetery at Tse Addo in Accra.
The rest of six, after the State funeral, would be laid to rest at the same cemetery.
