Accra-Ghana, Nov. 19, GNA – President of Liberia, George Weah, arrived in Qatar on Friday as he is expected to grace the opening ceremony of the 2022 World Cup.
This, according to the Qatar News Agency, was an invitation by Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani as the African football icon would be among the top dignitaries to grace Sunday’s opening ceremony at the Al Bayt Stadium.
President Weah and his delegation were welcomed upon arrival at Hamad International Airport by Minister of Sports and Youth Salah Bin Ghanim Al-Ali and Charges D’affaires of the Embassy of the Republic of Liberia to the State Ali Sylla.
In 1995, Weah was named FIFA World Player of the Year and won the Ballon d’Or, becoming the first and only player to win these awards.
Five African countries, including Senegal, Morocco, Cameroon, Ghana, and Tunisia, would be looking to represent the continent as they seek to make the semi-finals, a record no African side has achieved at the World Cup.
