– Mr Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, has entreated Members of Parliament (MPs) to uphold the rights of the vulnerable and needy persons in society and conduct themselves with integrity, free from selfish ambition.
In a speech read on his behalf by Mr Benard Ahiafor, the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, at the closing ceremony of the Third Meeting of the First Session of the Ninth Parliament, Mr Bagbin admonished MPs to remain decorous in their deliberations.
He condemned the chaotic scenes that erupted in the Chamber during the Minority’s protest over the Kpandai seat re-run, stressing that such incidents undermine the dignity of the House.
Despite the occasional heated exchanges during debates, the Speaker commended both the Majority and Minority Caucuses for their cooperation throughout the session.
He particularly lauded the leadership of the Majority and Minority Leaders for steering affairs with commitment and responsibility.
The meeting was marked by several significant developments, including the vetting and approval of Chief Justice Paul Baffoe Bonnie, the presentation of the 2026 Budget Statement and Appropriation Bill, and the passage of seven bills.
Among them were the Road Traffic Amendments Bill, which legalises the operation of commercial motorcycles (Okada), the National Health Insurance Amendment Bill, and the Petroleum Revenue Management Amendment Bill.
Parliament also ratified bilateral agreements between Ghana and Qatar to ensure the rights and welfare of Ghanaians working in the Gulf State are guaranteed.
In total, the House held 35 sittings over a nine-week period, underscoring its busy legislative calendar.
