Tema-Ghana, Oct. 19, GNA – The Rotary Club Districts 3191, 9104, and 3192, in collaboration with Tema Christian Eye Centre, have provided free eye surgeries for over 100 residents with severe eye defects in Tema metropolis.
As part of their several projects organised yearly, this year’s project was part of the Ghana Vision Project to help provide health aid for people to ensure an enabling environment for people to carry on with their activities without barriers such as eye defects.
The Rotary Club, as part of the Ghana Vision Project, with partners from India, is undertaking five-day free eye surgeries to cure severe eye defects that need very special treatment.
The partners for the free eye surgery are: Dr Venkatasubramaniam (D3192); Dr Ravishankar (D3191); Dr Elizabeth Paramesh (D3192); Rotary Bengaluru Platinum City; Rotary Yelahanka; Rotary Udyog; Rotary Vidyranyapura; Rotary Club of Accra Industrial; Rotary Club of Accra Premier International; Rotary Club of Teshie Nungua; Rotary Club of Obuasi; and Rotary Rajmal Vilas.
Mr. David Osei Amankwah, the Rotary Club District Governor for District 9104, said the core vision is to perform 100 free eye surgeries at the Tema Christian Eye Centre.
He said the eye is crucial to the human body in many ways, so as a club and as part of their healthcare outreach, they decided to embark on the project to put smiles on the faces of people.
He noted that they have been able to cover 42 successful surgeries and are hoping to complete all 100 by Saturday.
Dr. Eric Wiredu, of the Tema Christian Eye Centre, explained that the Club project on eye surgery is deemed remarkable as it has helped provide surgical intervention for patients whose cases were not correctable by medications and glasses.
He continued that the hospital’s desire is to provide complete eye services to patients regardless of the conditions they face and to meet them at their point of need.
Dr. Wiredu encouraged people with severe eye defects to come on board since finances are not a barrier.
Dr. Bernard M. Joseph, the Chief Executive Officer of Sunshine Healthcare Limited, who is also an optometrist, shared that the eye surgeries will help people see clearly with or without their glasses.
Explaining the surgery in detail, he said that it is performed by removing one’s lenses and replacing them with new ones, so a person who cannot see will be able to see after the surgery.
He added that the Rotary Club in India will always work with Ghana to provide health aid for people, and the 100-surgery package is the beginning of many more to come.
Some beneficiaries after a successful surgery shared their joy, as Madam Joyce Adjei stated that initially her vision was impaired and a friend who has done surgery recommended her, so after several thoughts, she came, and now she can see after the surgery, aside from a little discomfort, which the doctor has promised will go away after some days.
Mrs. Salome Kuonu also mentioned that, after several inquiries on the expenses for her eye surgery, she gave up until she heard the Rotary Club was doing it for free, and now she had a successful eye surgery without paying anything.
