The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has honoured and celebrated some 90 staff retiring from active service this year at the university’s 2025 send-off and long service award ceremony held on Tuesday.

The retirees, comprising 25 senior members, 18 senior staff, and 47 junior staff, served the university between 10 and 42 years.

They were eulogised for their unwavering dedication and contributions to the growth and transformation of UCC, serving in various capacities and roles.

For their awards, they received citations and items including living room furniture, deep freezers, refrigerators, beds, mattresses, and television sets.

Mr Robert Koomson and Madam Rita Aikins, who served the institution for 42 years each, received special awards as the longest serving retirees.

Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong, Vice Chancellor of UCC, expressed management’s appreciation to the retiring staff for dedicating their professional lives selflessly to the service of the institution.

“Your commitment has been instrumental in propelling UCC to remarkable heights, including our recent distinction as the number one university in Ghana and West Africa, and among the top 10 universities in Africa,” he said.

He assured management’s commitment towards supporting retirees, promising them a continuous medical support post-retirement.

He announced ongoing efforts to establish a provident fund for the university and urged staff unions to invest in the future of their members to ensure a fulfilling retirement.

Prof Boampong paid special tribute to the longest serving retirees and challenged the active staff to embrace the values of punctuality, honesty, loyalty, commitment and hard work.

He urged the retirees to stay active and prioritise their health.

Mr Adom Konadu, Director of Human Resource, UCC, acknowledged the role of the retirees in shaping the university into a world class academic institution and laying the foundation for the future.

He hailed them for their academic and administrative leadership, technical expertise, ground-breaking research, mentorship, scholarly contributions, hard work, and discipline, which spurred learning and innovation.

“You have shown commitment to UCC through changing times, institutional reforms and even national challenges.

“Your resilience is a testimony to your strong character and your belief in the vision of this university,” he emphasized.
